Nourish Your Mind... Read Good Books. Here Are a Few I love
THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED IN 1994, THE SAME YEAR I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TERMINAL CANCER, AND I NEEDED TO READ THIS HEALING WORDS. TWENTY FIVE (25) YEARS LATER, I AM STILL THANKFUL TO DR. CHOPRA FOR THIS BOOK.
In this volume, essential ideas from the work of Deepak Chopra, M.D., are arranged to create a transcendent experience for the reader - a journey into healing. Along the path, we discover that what we think and feel can actually change our biology. We learn to go beyond self-imposed limitations that create disease, and to seek that place inside ourselves that is at one with the infinite intelligence of the universe, the source of life. By the final pages of this book, the reader's consciousness will have been altered by the experience of the journey itself. Such change has the power to transform our lives, to grace us with the gifts of lasting peace and perfect health.
God, Medicine & Miracles: The Spiritual Factor in Healing
Have you ever gone into a doctor's office and come out feeling like a laboratory project rather than a human being? This book offers a refreshing perspective.
In Dr. Daniel's forty years in the medical community, he has discovered an important truth: people find more complete healing when treated as integrated persons - with minds as well as bodies, emotions as well as muscles, spirits as well as skin.
Through real-life stories and insightful studies, Fountain uses his experience to explore a balanced relationship between faith, medicine, and ultimate spiritual hope. (Click on the picture to purchase this book)

After being diagnosed with cancer when she was 32, Elissa Goodman explored holistic alternatives and combined them with traditional treatments and was able to beat the disease. Her husband wasn’t as fortunate; he succumbed to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma when he was only 45 after a regimen of doctor-prescribed chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants. Her personal experience led her to realize the many ways in which nutrition and lifestyle affect our ability to deal with health challenges.
In Cancer Hacks, Goodman has put together a comprehensive plan designed to offer some common-sense, natural and holistic advice to deal with the fear and uncertainty so many people face when confronted by this terrible disease. The various “hacks” described in the book are intended to help those dealing with cancer, or those whose loved ones may be facing the battle. Her suggestions are practical and easily incorporated into day-to-day living.
GRAY MATTER
A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy’s decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.
Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient’s diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer “request.” From there, readers get to look over Dr. Levy’s shoulder as he performs the operation, and then we wait—right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families—to see the final results.
Dr. Levy’s musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we watch him come to his ultimate conclusion that no matter what the results of the procedure are, “God is good,” we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.
Healing Into Immortality is the definitive guide to using your mind to heal your body. Gerald Epstein, M.D. - a pioneer in the field of mindbody medicine - provides a proven program of self-healing based on 45 years of clinical practice and a lifetime of investigation into the role of the mind as the source of illness and health. Physical symptoms are only the outward manifestation of a mind and body out of synch with spirit. The major sources of ill health and degeneration - Doubt, Expectation and Denial - sap our life energies. Through the power of mental imagery (guided imagery/visualizations), will and memory we can restore ourselves to wholeness, heal virtually every kind of disease and prevent illness. Utilizing the healing stories of the Bible and western spiritual practices, Dr. Epstein has revived a tradition of healing more than five thousand years old. Complete with case histories, exercises, and visualizations this book can quite literally save - and perhaps indefinitely extend -- your life.

MAKE YOUR BED: Little Things That Can Change Your Life and Maybe the World
This book should be read by every student in high school, and beyond! It is a thought-provoking guide to ways in which SMALL TASKS can change both our day to day lives, and consequently the world, for the better. The key lessons Admiral William McRaven speaks of are illustrated by accounts and anecdotes from his time in the navy and we learn about the people, the experiences and the places that had a profound and long lasting effect on McRaven, and how he sought to better his life as a result. While the lessons are small, they too are powerful: From EMBRACING FAILURE, to UNDERSTANDING that LIFE IS NOT FAIR, to STANDING UP TO BULLIES, and UNDERSTANDING THAT THE SIZE OF A PERSON'S HEART IS ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS. There is advice for everyone, whatever stage of life they’re at.
Powerful and poignant, witty and wise, it’s easy to see why the speech on which Make Your Bed is based so quickly went viral. The sort of book that I WANT TO READ: BOOKS THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO HELP US GAIN a new determination to change our lives for the better.
The first lesson (and the one after which the book was named) is to make your bed each and every morning, a lesson that may seem insignificant, but one that means every day is started with a completed task. Click the cover picture to purchase this book!
SCATTERED: How ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER Originates and What You Can Do About It
Wow! This is a life-changing book. There is power in the fact that Dr. Gabor Maté uses his personal experience to illuminate the world of the ADD CHILD and ADULT. ADHD is now the official name of the disorder. However, many people still use the term ADD, which was the formal name from 1980 to 1987.
I have ADD myself and I didn't know it, until I began my studies on EDUCATION, and later on when I began my career as a teacher, I had many students who suffered with this devastating (often misunderstood) disease not an illness per se. Do you know the difference between disease and illness? Disease usually causes illness, though one can have a disease without illness. For example, cardiac disease has been called the silent killer because you can have it without knowing it. ... Importantly, while disease is usually the cause
of illness, illness can affect the disease process and even cause a disease. :(very complicated) Anyhow... in his book Dr. Maté tells us that scientists have discovered that the human brain is not programed by biological heredity alone, that its circuits are shaped by what happens after the infant enters the world, and even while it is in the womb. The emotional states of the parents and how they live their lives have a major impact on the information of our children's brains. THE GOOD NEWS? Major changes in the circuits of the brain can occur in the child and even in the adult, if the conditions necessary for positive development are created.
Dr. Maté also offers so much insight into the personality of the ADD person, and such great guidance on how parents can help, and especially as to how an adult can 'parent' their own ADD tendencies. If you know an ADD person, this will totally change your attitude towards them. If you yourself have undiagnosed ADD, this book can help you understand yourself in a deeper and more loving way.
The notion that if something is wrong someone has to be at fault is a very simplistic notion! It would not help parents of children with ADD besieged on all sides by uncomprehending judgments and criticality of friends, neighbors, teachers, and even strangers in the street to have yet one more finger pointed at us!
